Chris's interest in horses began as a young girl and after months of pleading, her grandmother sent her for a week of summer horse camp in Florida. This was enough to get Chris hooked! One week of horse camp led to years of regular lessons back home in Pennsylvania, eventually landing her in an equine college program. Chris received a degree in Equine Sciences from Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA in 1989. Through her association with the equine program at Harcum College she got her introduction into the Chester County horse industry.
Chris was introduced to Judy Thayer, a 3-Day Event rider and Barn Manager at the prestigious Radnor Hunt Stables. Recognizing Chris's skill and aptitude, Judy hired her to be her Assistant and trained her in the sport of 3-Day Eventing. Over the course of 2 years, Chris began teaching her own set of students and before long had collected enough clients to run her own business from the Radnor Hunt barn. Her active business of training and coaching fulfilled her childhood dream of a life in the horse industry.
Like many young girls, Katie grew up dreaming of horses. On her 8th birthday she finally got the riding lessons she was waiting for! Her passion for horses only grew and continued on in through high school where she trained and competed in the local jumper divisions. While attending Harcum Junior College in 1993, she met Chris Grant who was teaching at Radnor Hunt Stables, where Harcum students took their riding lessons. A friendship was struck though it would be years before timing and opportunity would bring them together again.
After a year at Harcum, Katie transferred to Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA to pursue a BS in Equine Sciences. During her time at Delaware Valley College she was an active member of the Intercollegiate Equestrian Team and in 1997 she co-captained the team. She was the first Delaware Valley College student to ever win an individual IHSA title while competing in the IHSA Championships. After graduating with honors in 1997, Katie was offered and accepted a position at Delaware Valley College as an adjunct teacher.

April came to Alliquippa Stables in December of 2013 as our Assistant Manager. A native of Paoli, April grew up riding at Greylyn Farms in Malvern and attended Conestoga High School. She continued on to Delaware Valley College and graduated in 2009 with a degree in Equine Business. Following graduation, April began a career in the horse industry where she accumulated a diverse and professional skillset through years of hard work.
As Assistant Barn Manager at Blessington Stables in Furlong, PA and Hidden Valley Farm in Ridley Creek State Park, April had many responsibilities: From daily horse care and stable management to barn maintenance and teaching lessons. Looking for a change of pace, April accepted a job as Show Groom for Jennifer Alfano, top US Hunter Derby rider. Based in Buffalo, NY and Ocala, FL, April worked rigorous hours for Jennifer travelling on the show circuit, gaining invaluable experience and knowledge.
After nine months on the road, April decided to return to Pennsylvania to look for a position near her hometown of Paoli. Her search led her to Alliquippa Stables. The professional skills and knowledge she brought with her, now benefit the clients and horses at Alliquippa. From grooming and riding to meticulous care and upkeep, April is always willing to dig right in.
If you ask April what she likes most about her job at Alliquippa, she will answer, "The boarders are great, the people are great and I don't feel like I am coming to work when I come here!" This positive attitude coupled with her broad resume of experience make April an important and vital addition to the Alliquippa staff.
April lives in Paoli with "Lady", her Beagle-Daschund mix. On her day off you won't find her just sitting around! April enjoys exploring Valley Forge and Ridley Creek State Parks on her road bike...which is usually stashed in the back of her truck, ready to ride.
